The Aventon Soltera e-bike is a great example that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a practical and safe e-bike suitable for commuting or just for fun. It may not have the bells and whistles of some of the best electric bikes, but the Soltera offers great ride quality, easy controls, and no-frills accommodation that keeps the price low.
Looks really good too. The battery is hidden in the down tube, meaning you might not even realize it's an e-bike at first glance. That trend continues when you pick it up: at 41 pounds, most users can move it around with relative ease. This is perfect for a home that does not live on the ground floor.
If you are interested in buying your first e-bike and want something that offers quality at an affordable price, the Soltera is worth a look as one of the best electric bikes. But make sure you read the rest of the Aventon Soltera review first.
The Soltera costs $1,199 for the single-speed version, which is the model I tested. If you want to step up to the 7-speed version of the Soltera, it costs $1,299.

You can order Soltera from the Aventon website. Aventon offers free shipping on certain orders, and many discount opportunities (military, first responders, government workers, teachers).
There is also a reseller on the website for sellers in the US and Canada. This way, you can stop by a shop to test ride, find out which bike is right for you, and even buy from a local shop.
The Soltera comes in two sizes: regular and large. Aventon says regular is the best size if you're between 5'1" and 5'7". Large is best if you are between 5'7" and 6'4". There is also a foot rest option to make it easier to get on and off the bike. I'm 5'11" with a 30 inch inseam, and the large frame fits me perfectly.
The aluminum frame includes lights integrated into the seat cushions. There is also a light mounted under the handle on the front of the bike. It is better than the Swift Volt, another budget ebike, which only has lights. You can get the Soltera in three different colours. Aventon advertises the weight of the Soltera as 41 kilograms for the single version.

The wheels are also aluminium, and are attached to Tektro rim brakes. The wheel does not have a quick release lever; but they are locked. This can accommodate beginner riders who may not be familiar with how a quick release works.
The Soltera is a Class II e-bike, meaning it has a throttle as well as pedal assist mode. You can remove the throttle to make it a Class 1 e-bike if you want. Top speed is 20mph.
Phylion's removable lithium-ion battery is integrated into the frame's down tube. At first glance, the Soltera hardly resembles an e-bike in general, a nice touch on the efficiency of Aventon's battery integration. The battery itself is smaller than many batteries on similar bikes, which helps it to hide more effectively inside the frame.
The rear hub motor is Aventon brand and has 36V and 350W power. Aventon says this engine is "white labeled", which means Aventon is from another company. (They didn't say which company made the engine.)

Easy-to-Read Color LCD Display The BC280 has an integrated backlight for easy viewing in dark conditions. It can sync with an app that lets you adjust your lights, track your distance, see your battery life percentage, take notes, and even set yourself goals.
Aventon says you can carry up to 300 pounds on the Soltera. If that sounds scary with a single-speed drivetrain, Aventon offers a 7-speed version of the Soltera with disc brakes. It costs an additional $100.
The Soltera comes with a kickstand that attaches to the chain stay near the back of the bike. It feels solid and well built, which should come in handy if you end up hauling all the stuff on the bike. But the Soltera doesn't come with racks out of the box, so you'll need to buy those separately if you plan to carry luggage.
The Soltera immediately impressed me with its comfortable riding position. A sleek saddle with an upright riding position makes the Soltera a joy to ride, especially for those who don't have much flexibility in establishing aggressive positions.

The head unit display was also impressive. It is very bright, even in direct sunlight, and easy to read quickly. Navigating the menus using the control buttons is simple, and the level of support can easily be adjusted using the same control buttons.
Riding a bike can be difficult if you rely on pedal assist or throttle to do most of the work. It takes a second or so for the power assist to find the pedal assist or throttle either way.
This means you start driving under your own power from a dead stop. This isn't a big problem for most riders, but if the bike is loaded or you're going to rely mostly on motor assistance, this delay can be long enough to become a problem.
When you stand and move, the engine starts and accelerates smoothly. But just as the assist takes a second or two to kick in, the assist also takes a second or two to disengage, whether you're using the trigger or the feature pedal support.

The assistance is a little insufficient and comes mainly down hills in both throttle and pedal assist modes. You will be able to do it on your own if you live in a hilly area.
According to the Aventon website, you can get up to 20 miles using just the throttle, without pedaling. If you use the pedal assist mode, you can reach 63 miles on a single charge.
Using the throttle drained the battery quickly during my test. At 100% charge I used the throttle for less than five minutes and it dropped to 97%. I got about 0.6 miles. The throttle is best used for short trips, or if you need to start from a dead stop, especially on a loaded bike. Otherwise, you may want to use it sparingly to save battery life.
The 63 mile figure that Aventon rates as the best out there is what you get if you use the lowest assist. In the mid-range where you'll spend most of your time, you can expect a range of 25-40 miles on a single battery charge.

Pages and pages of accessories are available on the Aventon website. Some are branded by Aventon, some are third party pieces. Prices can vary greatly depending on how you want to customize your Soltera. You can get basic racks for $40 to $50, for example, or you can set up your Soltera to carry the kids with a Burley rack mount or frame-mounted child seat for about $150.
You can buy helmets, phone mounts, lights, bike locks, water bottles and cages, and even bike racks on the Aventon website.
Other cheap e-bike options abound. Many of them include motors from off-brand sources, and batteries that may or may not be from reputable sources. Soltera from Aventon is no different; the engine is branded by Aventon but sourced elsewhere.
I got to Aventon to find out where they got the motor and battery; The company told me that the motor is "white label", and the battery consists of Samsung or LG cells filled by a third party supplier. The battery on the test bike is Phylion branded.
Aventon Level.2: Issues With Pedal Assist
Samsung and LG are both big names, which is important when considering battery life, build and processing. But remember that third-party assemblers can also glue the casings, which makes it difficult or impossible to repair the battery, because the casing needs to be opened to get inside. We couldn't tell just by looking at the battery how it would fit or be repaired.

The pedal assist isn't the fastest, and the accessories package isn't the best out there. But Soltera still
