m1a sniper rifle

M1a Sniper Rifle - After World War II, engineers at the US government's Springfield Armory® began designing a model to replace the M1 Garand. In 1959, the US military adopted the emerging M14. The solid reliability of the M14, combined with its exceptional 7.62×51 NATO cartridge, made a lasting impression on American combat forces despite its relatively short lifespan. When it was replaced in 1970, the stage was set for the next phase in its history.

In 1974 the Reese family continued the legacy of the M14. Springfield Armory® in Geneseo, Illinois has begun offering a civilian, legal, semi-automatic version known as the M1A™. Powerful, accurate and reliable M1A™s quickly dominated the Nationals at Camp Perry. Shooters across the country have discovered the versatility and gratifying satisfaction of owning the M1A™.

The VSKA American Technology Meeting is the ultimate example of comblock ingenuity. Re-engineered with critical components using machined S7 tool steel, a material highly regarded for its strength... When looking at 308 caliber combat rifles, the M1A rifle range is hard to ignore. The M1A series has had many different models over the years, but overall it's a real contender in the 308 market as I recall. Sure, there are newer AR10 variants that offer easier controls and more capacity, but is the M1A still a true contender in the battle rifle market? When I first bought a gun from Springfield Armory, that was the question I set out to answer. Let's take a closer look at the Springfield Armory M1A Scout Squad Rifle.

Springfield Armory offers a variety of M1A models, from 16" taker models to 22" loaded models. I decided to go with the 18″ M1A Scout Squad variant for a couple of reasons. I wanted to test how useful and light the Full 18 could be as a 308 combat rifle. As for the Scout Squad, there are several variants with either a walnut wood stock or a black synthetic stock. I'm pretty tight on my guns, so for this review, I decided to go with a black synthetic stock, although it's not hard to change the stock if I want to down the road.

The Scout Squad comes with a 2-stage matchmaking trigger that breaks about 4.8-5.3lbs, which for me is standard on a Springfield. A special feature of the Scout Squad is Springfield's M1A muzzle brake. Along with the muzzle brake, the Scout Squad comes with an 18" 6-groove carbon steel barrel with a 1:11" twist ratio. The Scout Squad has a total weight of approximately 8.8 lbs with a National Match front sight and a fully adjustable front sight. For this review, Springfield also installed a 4th generation steel scope mount. MSRP for the Synthetic M1A Scout Rifle is $1,883.

For this rifle, I decided to look at a mid-range scope and plan to use shooting bags until I change the front sling rotation to include a slot for a bipod. A steel scope mount really opens up traditional binocular options. There is also a front top picatinny section for a scout-style optic. As I prefer, I decided to go for a more traditional style of coverage. Deciding to go this route, I made a temporary cheek riser until I could buy McMillan stock. For this review, I settled on a Vortex Optics Viper PST GEN II 3-15×44 optic with an EBR-7C MRAD reticle for mounting on a scout squad.

When I sat down and fired the first few rounds, I can honestly say I completely forgot I was shooting a rifle in 308 Win. Recoil from this M1A was so smooth I was sure I was shooting with another AR-style rifle in a smaller caliber. It wasn't until I really started thinking about it that I really noticed how smoothly this variation of the M1A shot. There are several differences between this older style rifle compared to the modern AR style rifle. Shooting the M1A really feels like a classic watch and is a completely different experience than shooting with a regular AR style rifle. Over the past few months, I've put about 950 rounds through the M1A with no malfunctions or glitches so far.

For accuracy testing, I shot several different 308 match rounds to see how the M1A grouped up at 100 and 300 meters. During my testing, I decided to put in two cans of Federal 175gr Sierra MatchKing Boat Tail Hollow Points and a can of Hornady 178gr Boat Tail Hollow Points. This particular rifle likes the Federal a bit more with an average group size of 1.25-1.4″ at 100 yards. Hornady averages 1.5″ in 178gr 100, which is still respectable for an older rifle design. This particular model does not have a match barrel, so I was pleased with its performance out of the box with the factory barrel.

As I mentioned before, the 2-stage trigger on my M1A is a match-grade trigger that comes standard from Springfield. The 2-stage match trigger has a slight pull before hitting the defined wall and breaks about 5.5lbs with a small reset to restart the process. The safety is built into the trigger guard with a simple push for a one finger release. Re-engaging the vault was a bit tight but still quite manageable. Loading magazines into the M1A is a simple process, first inserting the magazine front and then flipping the magazine back. For a younger audience, it might be a match for AR-style rifles, but it's pretty easy to master with a little practice.

Looking at the full-size version compared to the smaller scout squad rifle, I wonder how much the muzzle brake reduces overall recoil compared to its full-size M1A sibling. There is usually a noticeable difference in recoil and muzzle rise when both rifles are fired side by side. The Scout Squad was considerably smoother in terms of recoil and muzzle rise.

The studs and punches of the 308 round with the muzzle brake were shorter than its older brother the M1A, which had a flash concealer on it. The level of recoil in the Scout Squad was enough to make it feel like an entirely different rifle than the standard full-size M1A. Now I understand that a full-size 22" M1A has better range and accuracy at distance, but if we're looking at shooting fun,
