When I retired, I never took the final PCS step. When is the latest possible deadline for retirees to take this step? I heard you can ask for an annual extension and get it once a year forever.
Deciding where and when to take that last step right after you've gone off the road can be difficult. You may have found a civilian job at or near your last duty station, but still want to keep the option of moving later in your back pocket. Or you just don't know where you want to move yet.
When you retire, you are allowed to permanently relocate to any location in the US you choose, a location known as your "home of choice." However, what you've heard about the indefinite annual extension of this move is not true - there are strict time limit rules.
According to travel regulations, your last move must be within one year of retirement unless you apply for and receive an extension. These extensions can be granted for almost any reason if the carrier agrees. Under the scheme, you can apply for an extension five times, bringing your last transfer up to six years after your retirement date.

But transport officials warn that, like all rights, enforcement of the rules depends on individual services. This means that while the scheme can give you a maximum extension of six years, services can choose a shorter period. The best thing you can do is contact your local transportation agency to find out more.

In 1991, Congress incorporated the U.S. Naval Home (opened in 1834) and the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home (established 1851) in an independent agency of the executive branch of the federal government called the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH).
