In The 1950s, America Had A Crazy Plan: To Build A Submarine Aircraft Carrier
Launched in 1927, USS Saratoga (CV-3) was an American Lexington-class aircraft carrier, 268 meters (880 ft) long and 39,000 tons. She was originally designed as a battlecruiser, but later became the Navy's first aircraft carrier during construction under the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty.
During World War II service, the ship participated in numerous engagements, including Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of Iwo Jima, and responding to numerous attacks off the coast of Japan. The ship survived torpedoes, a flight deck bombardment, a hangar deck fire, two starboard side bomb blasts, and various other heavy attacks.
He was awarded seven battle stars for his service before being decommissioned at the end of World War II in 1945. In mid-1946, the ship was used as a target for nuclear weapons tests ("Operation Roads"). She survived the first test with minor damage, but sank in the second.
The wreck of the USS Saratoga ("Sarah") lies at a depth of 52 meters (190 ft) in the lagoon of Bikini Atoll. Her bridge is 18 meters (40 ft) and her deck is easily accessible at 28 meters (90 ft).

USS America is the only supercarrier sunk on target or in combat. Mechanical engineer Blake Horner explains why on Quora: "It took four weeks and was scrapped because it sank. Not only is it bigger than WWII battleships, but it's also very tough. Although it's not as heavily armored as earlier battleships, its it has a double hull, meaning weapons have to push through alternating layers of steel and hollow pockets to get inside it.

America was slated to be scrapped. However, it was selected in 2005 as a live-fire test and evaluation platform to aid in the design of future aircraft carriers. Their efforts were ultimately in vain. In a letter to them, then-Vice Admiral John B. Nutman explained:
"America will make a final and important contribution to our national defense, this time as a live test and evaluation platform.
