Handguns are reactive devices. They are carried by a person in response to a threat. They can be kept at home, ready to fight the threat at home. If we have a warning, it is usually recommended to use a rifle or shotgun.

Then the weapon is a weapon of opportunity. Although handguns are not the most powerful firearms, they can be handy when we need a firearm to save our lives. I have spent several months evaluating the Taurus Judge and have developed a positive opinion of the revolver for special use.

The Judge is a 5-shot revolver that can hold a .410 or .45 Colt round. This means true versatility. In addition, the design limits the accuracy and range of the revolver. As a pure short-range home defender, Taurus Judge has merit.

There is a strong argument that it is important to get on target quickly and get any shot. This is true. They taught that it is better to slow down and hit the center than to miss quickly. That doesn't mean you can't throw a quick punch; it just takes practice.

A judge satisfies this need by offering a burden. The .410 bore isn't overpowering, but with the right load — and that's the key — it offers a viable defensive option. Ironically, my evaluation suggests that the Taurus Judge can also be useful for close-range predator protection. My test piece is probably the most common Judge (there are several variations), a steel revolver with a 3.0 inch barrel.

The revolver is very light, handles better than it looks and has a good rate of fire for practitioners. Fit, finish and smoothness of movement are good. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This scope provides a good point of aim and helps to quickly reach the target.

A short-barreled pistol with a smoothbore projectile is illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are so close together that Taurus was able to design and manufacture a revolver that would chamber the .410 and .45 Colt cartridges. There is a shot, but it is very shallow.

Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to operate. Open the cylinder, fill the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. There is no safety of sliding and working on the stand. The concept allows the shooter to hit quickly with multiple shots. While each shot pellet doesn't carry a lot of energy, the impact of loads hitting multiple projectiles at once provides incredible injury potential.

You may have seen the ill-conceived videos and hype of a bullpen judge being shot at a target and punches being thrown at a target. Birdshot is a small shooting class designed to humanely kill a bird with a few shots. It is not useful in any way for personal protection. Like shooting a full-sized rifle, birdshot is good for practice, but not for personal defense. A 7- to 9-round load of Birdshot carries hundreds of small pattern-forming pellets.

In the standard PPE range, this model is 18 to 32 inches. This birdie went 7 yards from the putt. Even worse, a small bump penetrates only a few centimeters. A criminal wearing a heavy winter jacket may not be injured at all. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 buckshot load carrying #3 buckshot maintains a cohesive pattern of less than three inches. This is the preferred load for those using the .410 load for personal defense.

A federal load is advertised at about 750 fps, but in law it's actually over 800 fps. Total payload - 292 grains. Winchester offers a PDX load with over 300 grains of total payload, three flat discs and a BB Shot load. With this load, the pattern is often very large (16 inches to 15 feet) and the discs hit the center of the target.

Taurus Judge: Not For Handgun Carry

The Hornady .410 Defense Load contains a .41 caliber slug and two round balls. The slug usually goes straight with the sharp point and the balls spread across the center. It is very important to plan your shot at a paper target to determine how the shot will spread at 5-10 yards.

I think 7 yards is the outer range for those loads, although the Hornady slug with the FTX design might be useful a bit further out. Downline, buckshot, and specialty loads are useful for home defense and short-range predator protection. Penetration tests on water jugs and wet newspaper show that these charges cause serious injury.

Birdshot can go into a six-inch gallon jug, and some shots will go into the second jug, but very little. A federal 2 ½ inch shell with 4 OOO balls penetrates 24 inches, which can fit 18 inches in gelatin. That sounds good.

The Winchester PDX load shows a much larger pattern. However, all three PDX drivers offer a 3×4 pattern at 15 feet. The larger model consists of 12 BBs. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, and two round balls produce a 3-5 inch group at 15 feet.

These heavy loads should produce devastating results at an average range of 15 feet to 21 feet, the magical 7 yards. Actually, more by room or bedroom. The referee should be on target, but the pattern is spread out enough to help hit 10-15 feet. This pistol is not useful for shooting beyond 21 feet.

Another option is to load the Judge with .45 Colt ammunition. To comply with federal gun and ammunition laws, the Judge is a .45 Colt revolver capable of firing the .410 round. Barrel rifle. The long jump of a .45 Colt bullet from the chamber to the muzzle seems to limit velocity and accuracy. In some cases, this is true. But my latest test shows that this loss is not always possible.

The Judge is strong enough to withstand the heaviest loads, including the heavy load of SWC bullets. It depends on your recoil tolerance. A good choice for personal defense is Hornady Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity - 891 fps from a three-inch Taurus Judge barrel. Going back is simple. This load hits the target. At 15 yards, five shots from a hard bench shooting range yielded a 3-inch group. This is very clear for personal protection.

Another option worth considering is the Winchester PDX 225 grain JHP. This load hits at 780 fps. This bullet weight gives a lot of momentum. The .45 Colt is one of the few guns that works well without expansion. This has been proven in the Old West and in many agreements since.

An excellent choice is the Winchester 255 lead bullet. This bullet exits the referee at 770 fps. (For comparison, 778 fps from a 4 ¾-inch revolver.) Penetration is about 18 inches, ideal for personal defense, but recoil is light. Also a very accurate load with a 3 inch, 15 yard group. If the umpire sees a long shot,
