Before the new Squad Common Optic, the Marine Corps issued the Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight, or ACOG (called Rifle Combat Optic by the Corps) also manufactured by Trijicon. "Having optics that can reach longer distances will make the Marine Corps a more lethal first shooter," said Roger Boughton, MCSC's lead engineer for the SCO program, in a statement. "That means they can use less ammunition to take out the enemy."
